This is a knapsack

Thanks to Marilyn Levine for allowing me to use this picture of her artwork. Marilyn was a sculptor working in Oakland, who died in 2005. You can visit her website here to see a collection of her works.

The Knapsack Subcommitte takes its name from the humble "backpack" of yore. We don't call our trips knapsack trips any longer, but we've retained the name for its unique feeling, and historical connections to the early Sierra Club outings, when Knapsacking referred to carrying one's own pack on excursions through the high country, away from crowded camps.
